A lot of GHS athletes are putting in work during the summer months. For the basketball programs, June is often used as a time for team camps and Gravette Lions Head Coach Matt Busch has seen quality improvement so far in the first month of the summer.
“During May and June our teams focused on getting stronger in the weight room and playing in summer leagues and team camps,” said Busch. “In the weight room we have adopted a program that focuses on core strength and intermuscular coordination.”
The Lions also played a lot of live action games during the first few weeks of the break.
“On the court our seventh through twelfth grade teams played a combined 56 games in the first summer session,” said Busch.
While all players are giving great effort, Busch pointed out a couple at each level who really stood out.
Junior High Player Spotlight: 9th Grader- Will Betz
From Coach Busch: “Will is the most improved player in our program. He has worked hard to become a complete basketball player and his shot is improving each time he is on the court. He does a great job at competing every possession and he is a menace on defense.”
Senior High Player Spotlight: 12th Grader- Kaleb Furlow
From Coach Busch: “Kaleb has been shooting the basketball exceptionally well in the first summer session. His senior leadership and work ethic have set the standard for our program. Kaleb has worked hard in the weight room and you can see a big difference in his athleticism.”
For the remainder of the summer, Busch said his teams will stay busy both in the weight room and on the court.
“July 17, 18, and 19 we will go to the Tri Lakes Shootout in Branson,” said Busch. “We will be staying two nights there and we will be playing basketball in the morning and afternoon and each evening we will do some team bonding activities.”
